Primary School and Nursery

Year 1 - Mrs Cutts & Mrs Stapleton

Summer Term 2022

This term Year 1 are learning all about the Seaside past and present. The children will be exploring the seaside topic through different subjects across the curriculum.

In Literacy, we are busy planning a trip to the beach, so that we can write postcards home from our adventure.

In Geography, the children have been learning about the physical and human features of the seaside, locating them on maps. After half term we will be taking a trip back in time to explore and learn how seaside holidays have changed over time.

In Music, we will be learning some seaside related songs for the children to explore and add their our accompaniments to. We will explore beats, rhythms and tempos.

We have a new under the sea area in our classroom where we can explore extra activities across the course of the day to.

In Maths, we have started learning about multiplication and division! We have also started to learn about fractions so there are no bigger halves in our class when sharing smiley

In Science, we have been learning about plants. We have planted beans and we know what they need to grow. We can also label the different parts of a flower.

PE

PE days are Wednesdays and Fridays, please do remember to remove earrings for this, as well as PE kits.

Spring 2022

Happy New Year! Welcome back everyone...we hope you had a lovely Christmas break with all your families! A new term brings a new topic for Year 1; 'Frozen Planet'. In Literacy this gives us the perfect excuse to kick off with some lovely stories including one with a cute family of penguins called 'Poles Apart'! (Check it out - it's fab!) We will be moving onto some information writing soon, so be ready to learn lots from your children when they come home to you! We will continue working on our number skills in Maths and will also be counting in 10s, 5s and 2s. Our Science this term will be centring on different sorts of animals and some STEM experiments (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Please see our Curriculum Map for full coverage of topics this term!

Reading

A quick reminder that if your child reads at home 3 times a week, they will be rewarded, so please make sure you sign their liaison books regularly!

PE

As mentioned on ClassDojos, please make note of our brand new PE days; Wednesdays & Fridays...this is because we are fortunate enough to have some Hockey Coaching for Year 1!

ClassDojos

We will continue to communicate to you via ClassDojos, so please contact us if you have a query. (But please also note messages will be responded to between the hours of 8.30am - 5pm, thank you).

Looking Back On Autumn 2021!

Year 1 had a very busy first term!...

We looked 'pretty in pink' for our 'Pink/Jeans For Genes Day' back in October, raising a fab amount for 2 charities, so thank you for all your kind contributions!

Also in October, 'Tendring Eldercare'/'Homestead' invited us to create positive and uplifting designs for postcards to be sent out to elder members of the community...and  the children were awarded with certificates for their artistic efforts! Well done to everyone! (Some artists in the making there, we think!)

Here's the link to the Standard article re this, in which we are mentioned as school!

Then, in November, we dressed in yellow for 'Children In Need Day' and collected more impressive donations for this worthy cause. Mrs Greenhalgh (our Year 1 Link Governor) joined us on this special day and the children LOVED her Pudsey t-shirt and playing playground games with her at breaktime! (The perfect excuse for posing for another photo!)

As Christmas approached, so did our mischievous elves; Snowball and Trixie - they got up to allsorts (as I'm sure you heard from your children!) We had great fun learning to take turns (and all about alphabetical ordering too) by opening our TWO chocolate advent calendars this year; yum yum!

We thoroughly enjoyed performing our Christmas Nativity to you this year - there was some very impressive learning of lines and character acting going on there - thank you for being our audience for this!

Then it was time to don our Christmas jumpers to help 'Save The Children' - what a colourful and festive photo that made!

We were lucky enough to have SEVEN winners in Year 1 in Mrs Arnold and Mrs Marsh's special Breakfast Club raffle - we hope the children enjoyed their prizes over the holiday!

In the last week of term we actually had a flying visit from the BIG man himself; yes Father Christmas! He left us a big sack full of presents which turned out to be some awesome games to play during our Friday' Golden Time'; including a marvellous marble run which has proved to be a favourite!

Finally, another SEVEN children were awarded with certificates from Attendance Ted for 100% attendance in Autumn Term - wow!

Phew, what a lot of achievements to be proud of - keep up the good work everyone!

Autumn 2021 Photos!

Hello everyone and welcome to Year 1!

Let's start by introducing all the wonderful ladies that will be working in our classroom this year.

Our fabulous Mrs Marsh is our main classroom LSA and our right hand woman. Also helping us every day is Mrs Johnston, who is on a 1:1 basis in our class. We are also lucky to have Miss Cooper helping on some days with spellings and word walls and Timestables. Finally,  you are extra lucky as there are two class teachers in Year 1 this year. We are Mrs Cutts ( Monday & Tuesday) & Mrs Stapleton (Wednesday-Friday) :).

Our Topic in Autumn 2021

This term our Topic is 'Let's Play' where we will be learning all about old and new toys! This has given us an extra reason to put a role play toy shop in the classroom! The children are already enjoying looking at toys from different eras and comparing them to toys they play with now. Please feel free to share the toys you used to play with and send pictures via Class Dojo :). The children will produce History work, Art work and Literacy work from our exciting topic too.

Lost in the Toy Museum

Within our Literacy work we will be creating some wonderful work based on the story 'Lost in the Toy Museum'. The story is about a group of toys living in a museum who came to life at night. However, one night is slightly different and the character Bunting goes on a big adventure :).

We really want to encourage the children to love reading as much as we do this year. We will be enjoying daily story time together and exploring different Authors.

I really would like to encourage the children to read as much as possible at home too. Therefore, every time they read at home they receive 5 dojos and if they read 3 times a week then they win a prize from the prize box :).

The children will be focusing on the numbers this half term. Being able to recognise them, order them, count them and much more to make sure that they have a strong foundation we move onto bigger challenges later in the year.

Thank you so much for checking out our Class Page!

Keep your eyes out for more uploads :).
